Because signage is often the first direct contact between brand and visitor, we see it as a key element of brand identity. We believe that signage must work on two levels—the functional and the emotional—with each aspect prevailing to varying degrees depending on the context.
From a functional standpoint, signage must clearly communicate information, ensure maximum impact, and be universally accessible and easy to use and understand. Signage can also express a brand’s essence, positioning, and personality. At KerrSmith, we see our role as helping our clients make these powerful and lasting connections through innovation and creativity.
Human-centric insight methods such as ethnography and empathic modeling allow us to understand motivations and behaviour impacts within project frameworks. We work closely with clients and architects to align our graphic work with project vision. Signage requires extensive sign planning, systems design approaches as well as typographic and product styling.
Our design experience includes a number of signage systems for University of Toronto faculties. From research and understanding through to engagement, if necessary, we proceed to sign planning phases and implementation and production. Our experience ensures we use the correct types of signs, styles, tools and media from directional & identification signs, to landmarks, maps, and info boards etc.
Consistent, clear, simple, unambiguous language and pictograms are used as appropriate. Systems based on numbers, letters, colours, direction, and route were are also designed. Brand guidelines were used to integrate wayfinding and any graphic murals, and privacy screens into the spaces.
